Debian 11 Now Available On The Discovery Network
Debian 11 as an OS template for Discovery NVMe VPS instances is now being pushed out to all regions on the network. With the release of Debian 11 on our network also comes some changes to the way we package up OS templates. We have listened to your comments about activating root logins on the network. Whilst we understand logging in to create a root password and edit the SSH settings takes time. We still believe it’s a positive for the network. In 2020, we recorded 116 instances of a root password being brute-forced on the network. In all cases, there was no firewall configured inside the instance. But that is still 116 times more than this should have happened.
We understand this does add to customers work so we can meet our customers halfway. From November 2021 we will package all-new OS templates with the SSH settings already configured. You must still use the NoVNC or Xterm console to log in and set a root password. But, that will be all that is required. After setting the root password you should then log out and back in using the root account to delete the user account if you do not plan to use it.
Debian 11 Kernel Updates
Debian 11 features the newer V5 kernel over the V4 kernel that Debian 10 used. This brings support for newer hardware and performance increases. Another notable change in Debian 11 is password hashing. Debian 11 now uses yescrypt by default instead of SHA-512 which brings in some great security improvements.
IPv6 Configuration
Starting November 2021, new OS templates we now automatically configure the IPv6 addresses assigned to the instance. The F2H service runs at boot and configures the required networking and static routes. Additional IPs still currently need to be configured but we’re working on this.
